Ferrara, Italy, 1616. Parchment scroll on a craved wooden staff written and illuminated by Moshe ben Avraham Pescarol for Mordecai ben Eliahu ha-Levi of Brescello. 4.29 meters in length and 27 cm high. Square Italian script. The Megilla is divided into columns 95 mm. wide by pillars 45 mm wide, composed of two bands in dark blue-green; between them an amphora with styled foliage and flowers. Each pillar stands on a square base with a depiction of an animal, bird or flower (pen and color). At the top of each column a male bust, wearing a blue garment and a red fez. Above the text, in large rectangles (95x70mm.) depictions of various episodes from the Megilla, Richly illuminated. These illustrations give a lively representation of the manners and
customs of the period, as well as of the artist’s notions of Orientals.
At the base of the text, in smaller rectangles (94x40), floral motives
on a violet background.
