The society was established in December 1999 with a view to organizing and facilitating the growing community of professional Israeli historians and philosophers of science and others interested in the field; to promoting research into the history and philosophy of Israeli science; and to nurture connections between the Israeli community and sister societies abroad. The society is sponsored by the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute.
Publication of a monthly Newsletter detailing all HPS related activity in Israel and news of the profession in Israel and abroad. Organizing and running an annual conference broadly dedicated to the history and philosophy of Israeli science. The first two conferences (held in March 2000 and March 2001) dedicated sessions to the history of genetics in Israel, the Israeli nuclear project, 50 years of Qumran research, the Hebrew University, Einstein Institute of Mathematics and the early years of Israeli sociology and anthropology.
Printing and circulating the conference papers among the members of the society.
Developing and maintaining professional ties and joint projects with related Israeli societies and organization. Joint workshops are in the planning with the Israeli organization of orthodox scientists, and the community of science educators.
Prof. Menachem Fisch was elected President of the society for the next four years.
