What's New?

The Book Giveaway has ended

In June 2011 The National Library of Israel distributed several thousands of books for free.

Following the accumulation of excess books, from bequests and donations, the Library decided to offer them to the public free of charge.

The majority of books offered were in English and other foreign languages in a wide variety of fields: Art, history, bibliography, prose and more. A relatively small number of Hebrew books were distributed as well. The books distributed were not within the Library's fields of interest or exist in a sufficient number of copies on the Library's shelves.

For further clarification, please note that the books offered arrived as donations and are not copies received through legal deposit.

The book distribution began on Sunday, June 26th, and continued for 5 days. It took place in front of the National Library, in the Edmund J. Safra campus of the Hebrew University at Giva't Ram, Jerusalem.

This was the second book giveaway held recently.
Details on a future giveaway will be announced.

New Online Book Request System in the National Library

We are delighted to announce that on Sunday, 22.5.2011, we are introducing a new online request system for ordering items from the stacks. This service will replace the current method of ordering, using printed slips. After this date we will no longer accept requests on these slips.

This new online service will improve the lending services of the Library significantly: It will be possible to request items before you come to the Library, follow the status of the request using your reader's card, and receive notification by email, when the item arrives in the reading room or if it has not been found. The online process will lead to a decrease in the number of mistakes that are common when request slips are filled in by hand and should thus greatly reduce the number of negative responses.

To be eligible to use the online request system, you must have a reader's card. This can be applied for directly via the online catalogue. Readers who have a Library card will only have to enter their details. A reader will be allowed a quota of 20 items at any one time.

Please note that during the first two weeks, until Sunday 5.06.2011, you must process any items which are currently in the reading rooms on your name: please come to or call the reading room desk to receive your slips or details of the items and reorder each one online using the new system. Items which are not processed in the new system during this period will be returned to the stacks. You will have to request the items again from scratch.

Guidelines and explanations can be found in the reading rooms and on the Library's website. Staff members will be available in the reading rooms, circulation department, and reference room, to assist readers during this transition period.

We would appreciate your patience and cooperation during this initiation period.

For any further questions, please consult the service desks or contact the Circulation Department, 02-6585004.
