Millot ha-Higgayon (Treatise on Logic)This is a philosophical work on logic written by Maimonides as a young man. It is a concise, didactic commentary on the basic terms of Aristotelian logic. It testifies to the author’s world view which held that the principles of Judaism could be linked to the philosophical concepts of Greek wisdom without contradiction. The treatise was intended as the preface to a larger work that was never completed. The Judeo-Arabic original, Makalah fi Sina’at al-Mantik, is preserved in incomplete form in two manuscripts: about one third of the text is missing at the end. It was published by I. Efros , New York , 1939, pp. 3-19, along with three different Hebrew translations: that of Moses Ibn Tibbon ( first published with a Latin translation by Sebastian M?nster in Basel , 1527); another, by Ahituv ben Isaac of Palermo and the third by Joseph ben Joshua ibn Vives. The translation done by Ahituv ben Isaac of Palermo is found in several manuscripts, the most complete version of which is preserved in the Jewish National and University Library (Heb.8° 3308). The text published by M. Chamizer in the Festschrift zu Hermann Cohen , Berlin , 1912, pp. 423-456. is based on this. A new translated edition (Beor melekhet ha-higgayon) was published with the Arabic original by Qafih, Kiryat Ono, 1997.
